MEDIA METRICS: Diablo 3’s heaven and hell week

The anticipation and eventual frustration of the Diablo 3 launch dominated Australia’s rising searches this week, with the Blizzard game topping both the search and news trends at Google Australia for the week.

The tenuous launch of the highly anticipated PC game dominated the gaming press, with gamers across the world angry at the game developer’s error messages as they tried to access the game they’d just spent $60+ to play.

The domination on Google trends suggests people were scrambling to search for fixes on Google, quickly followed by posting angry messages on Twitter with the hashtag #error37 - which trended worldwide for days. Thankfully, the main problems now seems to have been sorted.

Other Google rising searches were related to Manchester City’s thrilling English Premier League football win, Prince’s current Australian gigs and racehorse Black Caviar’s first British race.

A story about the 18 year old student suing her former school because she failed to quality for her preferred University course was easily Australia’s most shared article of the week, with The Age story garnering over 30,000 Twitter and Facebook shares across the week.

The passing of ‘Angel of The Gap’ Don Richie and The Wiggles shake-up both made the list too, plus a very on-topic piece about gay parenting at The Drum also ranking highly.

The magazine websites in Australia held steady week-on-week, although Woman’s Day grabbed the top spot from Australian Women’s Weekly.

Business and finance websites were topped by SMH’s business section, with a slight growth overall.
